Valley Springs sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County, roughly an hour southeast of Sacramento, where Gold Rush history runs deep and the rolling oak-studded terrain gives way to the New Hogan and Camanche reservoirs. It's a part of California that doesn't trumpet itself — quiet ranch land, small towns, and a genuine working-country feel that's a world away from the Bay Area or the Central Valley corridor.
La Contenta Lakes Golf fits that character well. The "Lakes" in the name signals water in play, and the foothill setting means elevation changes, oak trees framing fairways, and the kind of natural contour that course architects in flatter regions spend fortunes trying to manufacture. A par 72 layout here likely rewards accurate ball-striking over raw power, with the terrain doing much of the work a designer might otherwise force.
Calaveras County isn't a golf destination in the marquee sense, which is partly its appeal. A round here is relaxed and unhurried, the pace dictated by locals who know every bounce and breeze — the kind of course that regional regulars quietly claim as their own.
