One of Pittsburgh's oldest and most distinguished private clubs, Pittsburgh Field Club traces its roots to the late 19th century and has long occupied a central place in the city's sporting and social life. The course was designed by William Flynn, the Philadelphia-based architect responsible for Shinnecock Hills and Cherry Hills, which alone signals the caliber of strategic thinking at work here. Flynn's routing takes full advantage of the rugged, rolling terrain of Fox Chapel, the affluent borough on Pittsburgh's North Side where the club sits, producing a layout that demands creativity and course management rather than raw power.
Flynn's fingerprints are evident in the variety of angles and the way the land dictates risk and reward without ever feeling manufactured. The course plays to a par of 71, which reflects a design built on precision rather than length — a common thread in Flynn's work.
