Few courses anywhere carry the weight of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Opened in 1919 and designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant — both amateur golfers, remarkably — it hugs the Monterey Peninsula's rocky coastline with a drama that no inland course can replicate. The back 9 turns hard into the Pacific, and holes like the par-3 7th, playing downhill to a green nearly surrounded by ocean, and the sweeping dogleg of the 18th along the water's edge have become among the most photographed and replayed in the sport. It has hosted 6 U.S. Opens, multiple U.S. Amateurs, and PGA Championships, cementing its standing at the very top of any serious course ranking.
The Monterey Peninsula itself is one of California's great stretches of coastline — cypress-lined, fog-prone, and wild in a way that resists the manicured feel of many resort destinations.
