Chautauqua Institution sits on the western shore of Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York, one of the most unusual communities in America — a Victorian-era assembly ground founded in 1874 that still draws tens of thousands of visitors each summer for lectures, performances, and religious programs. Golf has been part of the Institution's fabric for well over a century, and the Lake Course is the longer and more demanding of the 2 courses the Institution maintains on its grounds, offering a counterpoint to the shorter Hill Course that winds through the wooded bluffs above.
Playing golf inside the Chautauqua Institution gates carries a distinct atmosphere you won't find at a standard resort. The grounds feel more like a small, pedestrian 19th-century village than a conventional golf destination, and the Lake Course reflects that heritage — a traditional layout shaped by mature trees and the rolling terrain of the Allegheny Plateau, with the lake itself providing an ever-present backdrop.
This is decidedly seasonal golf, with the region's short summers concentrating play into a busy window from late spring through early fall. For visitors already drawn to the Institution's cultural programming, a round here is as much about the setting and the history as it is about the card you post.
