Portugal's Algarve has no shortage of golf courses, but the western stretch around Lagos and the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina operates under stricter environmental protections than the resort-heavy east, which shapes everything about how courses here were built and how they feel. Espiche Golf opened in 2009, designed by Rui Paredes, and sits in this quieter, more rugged corner of the region — rolling inland terrain of cork oak and cistus scrub rather than the manicured oceanfront drama of Quinta do Lago or Vale do Lobo. The layout works with the natural contours of the land, keeping a low profile that suits both the landscape and the planning constraints of the area.

The course plays as a good-length test without overwhelming the recreational golfer, and its relative seclusion means tee times are easier to come by than at the Algarve's flagship venues.

Lagos itself is one of the most historically rich towns on the southern coast — a former center of Portuguese maritime exploration with a striking old town, Atlantic beaches, and a local feel that the busier resort strips have largely lost.
