Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Senator Course at Capitol Hill sits among the most ambitious public golf projects ever built in America. Conceived in the late 1980s as an economic development initiative for Alabama, the Trail deployed RTJ Sr. himself to design courses across the state — and Capitol Hill, completed in 1999, became the crown jewel. The Senator is widely regarded as one of the finest public-access courses in the country, routinely appearing on national top-100 lists and regularly singled out as the best of the Trail's 26 courses.
The design sprawls across a dramatic landscape of Alabama River bottomland and high bluffs overlooking the water, giving holes a scale and grandeur unusual for anything outside of resort golf. Long forced carries over wetlands, heroic risk-reward decisions along the water's edge, and massive, undulating greens define the character here. It plays as boldly as it looks.
Prattville sits just northwest of Montgomery in central Alabama, where the climate allows a long season and Bermuda fairways stay firm and fast well into autumn. For serious golfers making a dedicated Trail trip — and many do, routing multi-day itineraries around it — the Senator is typically the main event.
