Slave Lake sits at the edge of Lesser Slave Lake — one of Alberta's largest lakes — in the heart of the boreal forest, about 2.5 hours northwest of Edmonton. It's a working town, resource-industry territory, and the golf here reflects that straightforward character: unpretentious, community-rooted, and genuinely tied to the land around it. The surrounding spruce and aspen forest that defines this part of the province gives a course like Gilwood a natural separation between holes that no amount of landscaping could manufacture.
A full 18-hole layout in a small northern Alberta community is a serious offering — this isn't a quick 9-hole diversion but a proper round of golf for a region where the sport has to earn its place in a short season. Summer days this far north run long, which means late-evening tee times that would be unplayable further south are entirely reasonable here.
Gilwood carries the name and feel of a members' club that serves its community first — the kind of place where the same regulars have walked the same fairways for decades, and where a visitor is welcomed into something real rather than staged.
