Few golf courses in the American Southwest carry a slope rating of 150 without earning every digit of it. Reflection Bay Golf Club, set in Henderson just southeast of Las Vegas, is the rare desert layout that asks for genuine shot-making from the first tee to the final green — a 7,170-yard, par-72 test that plays even harder than its course rating of 75.6 suggests on a hot afternoon when the Mojave decides to remind you who's in charge.
The setting is Lake Las Vegas, a 320-acre reservoir carved from the desert floor, and the water is not merely decorative. It comes into play with a persistence that rewards patience and punishes ambition in equal measure. Jack Nicklaus designed the routing, weaving fairways along shoreline edges and across peninsulas where the lake glitters against the bone-dry Spring Mountains backdrop — an almost surreal juxtaposition of lush green turf and baked Mojave scrub.
This is resort golf that refuses to be soft about it. The course can be walked in sandals by eye, yet the yardage, the water, and the wind that funnels through the Nevada basin make a mockery of overconfidence. Bring more than one sleeve of balls, and bring a game.
