San Roque Club

Few courses on the Iberian Peninsula carry the pedigree of San Roque Club, the Sotogrande-adjacent layout that Dave Thomas designed and opened in 1990 on the rolling hills above the Costa del Sol's quieter western fringe. Thomas shaped the land into a parkland course of genuine tournament quality — tree-lined fairways, significant elevation changes, and a routing that rewards strategic thinking over raw power. The club hosted the Volvo Masters on the European Tour multiple times during the 1990s and early 2000s, when it stood among continental Europe's most respected venues.

San Roque sits within one of Spain's most concentrated pockets of serious golf. Valderrama is practically a neighbor, and Sotogrande's cluster of marquee layouts means the area draws low-handicap travelers who take the game seriously. The Andalusian landscape here is drier and more rugged than the manicured resort strips further east — cork oaks, umbrella pines, and the distant shimmer of the Strait of Gibraltar give the setting a distinct character.

A second course, New San Roque, was later added to the property, but the original Old Course remains the draw — a measured, mature design that plays firmly and fast in the region's reliable sunshine.
