Growling Frog Golf Club takes its name from the endangered growling grass frog, native to the wetlands and waterways that thread through this site on Melbourne's northern fringe. The course sits in the Yan Yean corridor, a semi-rural pocket of Victoria where the city gradually gives way to open farmland, creek flats, and native bush — a setting that gives the layout a noticeably different character from the manicured parkland courses closer to the CBD.
The club is a public facility that has built a strong following among Melbourne golfers looking for something beyond the suburban staples. The course works with the natural contours and vegetation of the site, and water comes into play on multiple holes, rewarding accurate ball-striking over power.
Yan Yean itself is probably best known to Melburnians for its historic reservoir, one of the city's oldest water supplies. Playing golf out here carries a certain unhurried, away-from-it-all quality — the drive north through the Plenty Gorge region is part of the experience, and the wildlife on and around the course is genuinely worth paying attention to.
