Few municipal courses in England carry the character that Eaton has quietly accumulated over its long life in south Norwich. Laid out across the gently rolling parkland of Eaton Park — one of the city's most beloved green spaces — the course occupies ground that has shaped local golf in Norfolk for generations. The park itself was developed in the interwar years, and golf has been part of its identity ever since, drawing a broad cross-section of Norwich residents who might never set foot inside one of the county's private clubs.
The parkland setting does real work here. Mature trees define corridors and complicate angles, and the ground movement, modest as it is, creates enough variety to reward proper course management. A par of 70 tells you this isn't a power hitter's showcase — the design leans on precision and placement rather than raw length, which suits the mixed and social membership culture a public facility naturally attracts.
Norfolk's golf scene punches above its weight for a largely flat county, with Hunstanton and Royal Cromer representing its coastline credentials. Eaton sits at the other end of that spectrum — urban, accessible, unpretentious — and is better for it.
