Sugarloaf Golf Club occupies one of the most dramatic pieces of ground in New England golf, carved into the western Maine mountains at the base of Sugarloaf, the state's premier ski mountain. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the course, which opened in 1986, and he made the most of an extraordinary canvas — elevation changes are severe, fairways tumble through dense spruce and fir forest, and the surrounding peaks stay in view for much of the round. It routinely appears on lists of the best courses in Maine and ranks among the most memorable mountain golf experiences in the Northeast.
The Carrabassett Valley setting means this is genuine wilderness golf. Wildlife sightings are common, the air is noticeably thin and cool even in midsummer, and the mountain terrain creates shotmaking challenges no flat-country course can replicate. The season runs short by most standards, roughly late May through October, which only adds to the sense of occasion when you do get out here.
This is a destination worth planning around. Sugarloaf the resort handles lodging, dining, and activities beyond the round, but the golf course itself is the draw — a rare layout where the scenery and the design demand equal attention.
