Few courses in central Massachusetts carry the architectural pedigree that Blackstone National does. Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1999, it occupies a rugged, wooded stretch of the Blackstone Valley — a landscape of exposed granite ledge, elevation change, and hardwood forest that Jones used to dramatic effect. The result is a course with genuine drama and variety, one that rewards careful course management as much as ball-striking. It has earned a consistent place among Massachusetts' top-rated public layouts, drawing players from across New England willing to make the drive to Sutton.
The Blackstone Valley itself has a storied past — the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, where the rushing waters of the Blackstone River powered the nation's first textile mills. None of that industrial heritage intrudes on the golf, but the sense of deep, old New England is everywhere: stone walls threading through the rough, dense canopy overhead, and a terrain that feels earned rather than manufactured.
As a daily-fee course, Blackstone National pitches itself at the serious public golfer looking for a real test in a genuine landscape. The routing makes strong use of the property's natural contours, and players leaving the 18th with a round near par have genuinely accomplished something.
