There's something genuinely unusual about arriving at a golf course by ferry. Rottnest Island sits roughly 18 kilometres off the coast of Fremantle in Western Australia — not Queensland, despite what any mislabelled listing might suggest — and the island itself is one of Perth's most beloved escapes, famous for its car-free roads, turquoise bays, and the quokka, the small marsupial that has made the island internationally recognisable.
The golf club reflects the island's unhurried character. This is a course where the setting does much of the heavy lifting: ocean light, coastal scrub, and the particular flatness of a limestone island shaped by wind and sea. A par 70 layout suggests a routing that favours precision over power, with likely shorter par 4s or the removal of a par 5 or two — rewarding players who can manage a links-adjacent environment where the breeze off the Indian Ocean is rarely absent.
Rottnest is ultimately a place people come to disconnect, and the golf here fits that spirit. It won't be the most demanding course you play in a season, but it may well be the most memorable for reasons that have nothing to do with your scorecard.
