Former Raffles Country Club

Few golf venues in Singapore carried the social weight of Raffles Country Club, which for decades occupied a sprawling site in the western corridor near Choa Chu Kang. The club ran 2 18-hole courses — the Palm and Lake layouts — designed to give a substantial membership serious golf in a city-state where land has always been at a premium. It carried the prestige you'd expect from the Raffles name, drawing a well-heeled membership and functioning as one of the island's more coveted private affiliations through the 1990s and into the 2000s.

That era ended decisively in 2011, when the Singapore government reclaimed the land for public development — a reminder that in Singapore, even long-established institutions hold their ground on the government's terms. The site eventually gave way to housing, and the club dissolved rather than relocate. It now exists as a piece of Singapore golf history rather than a destination.
