Tama Hills Golf Course sits on a U.S. military installation in the western Tokyo suburbs, operated by the U.S. Army's Installation Management Command and open to active duty, reserve, and retired military personnel along with Department of Defense civilians. That unusual status gives it a character unlike virtually any other course in Japan — a slice of American military recreation culture transplanted into the wooded hills of Tama, where the Kanto Plain begins its gradual climb toward the mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture.
The Tama area itself is a quieter, greener counterpart to central Tokyo, and the course takes advantage of terrain that rolls through a landscape of dense secondary forest typical of the Kanto hill country. The "Korai Greens" designation refers to Korean zoysia grass, a surface common across Japanese courses that rewards a precise, penetrating ball flight and can humble players expecting the softer, more receptive putting surfaces of American parkland tracks.
For the military community stationed in the greater Tokyo region, Tama Hills represents a meaningful recreational anchor — a way to play full 18-hole golf without the formidable green fees and membership structures that define most of the surrounding Japanese private clubs.
