Ashland sits at the southern tip of Chequamegon Bay, one of the largest bays on Lake Superior, and the golf course takes its name directly from those waters. This is northern Wisconsin in its most honest form — a region shaped by the lake's moderating influence, hardwood and conifer forests, and a working-class heritage tied to logging and shipping. Golf out here carries a straightforward, unpretentious character that suits the landscape.
Without detailed records of the course's specific design history or architect, what can be said with confidence is that a municipal or semi-private layout in a small Lake Superior port town tends to reflect its community: maintained by people who genuinely use it, played by regulars who know every quirk of the greens through the long freeze-and-thaw cycles that define Wisconsin seasons. The short northern summers mean conditions are typically at their best from late May through September.
Ashland itself is a quiet gateway to the Apostle Islands, and the surrounding scenery — big water, mature trees, clean air — gives a round here a sense of place that courses in busier golf markets rarely deliver.
