One of New Jersey's most storied private clubs, Essex County Country Club carries a history that stretches back to 1887, making it among the oldest golf organizations in the United States. The course was redesigned by A.W. Tillinghast — the same architect behind Winged Foot and Baltusrol — and his fingerprints are evident in the strategic bunkering and the demand for precise shotmaking over raw power. It has long held a place in the upper tier of New Jersey's private clubs, the kind of establishment where the membership is multigenerational and the traditions run deep.
West Orange sits in Essex County's Watchung Mountain foothills, a prosperous inner-ring suburb roughly 15 miles west of Manhattan. The terrain is naturally rolling, and the course uses that topography to create variety and visual drama across its 18 holes — elevation changes that a flat scorecard simply cannot convey.
At par 71, the layout is not a bombers' course. The emphasis falls on placement, course management, and the ability to shape shots — the hallmarks of a Tillinghast design that rewards the thinking golfer far more than the long one.
