Few golf settings in Europe carry the visual weight of Ticino, Switzerland's Italian-speaking canton wedged between the Alps and the Italian lakes. Ascona sits on the northern shore of Lago Maggiore, where the light has a distinctly Mediterranean quality — warmer, softer, more southern than almost anywhere else in Switzerland — and the golf course here inhabits that landscape fully. Playing golf in Ascona means playing golf with the lake and its surrounding mountains as constant companions.
Ticino's golf scene is modest in number but serious in scenery, and the Ascona course belongs to a tradition of Swiss golf that prizes setting as much as strategy. The terrain in this corner of the canton rolls and folds in ways shaped by glacial history, and any course built here must work around and with the land rather than impose itself on it.
For visitors, the appeal is inseparable from the town itself — one of the most charming lakeside resorts in the Alps, with a piazza culture, mild winters by Swiss standards, and a relaxed pace that carries over onto the course.
