Few public golf courses in California command the kind of respect La Purisima does. Designed by Robert Muir Graves and opened in 1986, it has built a devoted following among serious golfers who seek out courses that actually test their game. Golf Digest and other major publications have ranked it among the best public courses in California — remarkable for a municipal layout in a small Central Coast city — and it routinely draws players from well outside the region willing to make the drive specifically for this experience.
The course moves through a dramatic canyon landscape in the Santa Ynez Valley foothills, with native chaparral, rugged terrain changes, and prevailing coastal winds that fundamentally shape how every round plays. Graves designed the routing to work with the land rather than against it, producing holes that feel earned rather than manufactured. Several stretches demand real shot-making — the back nine in particular has a reputation for humbling overconfident scorecards.
Lompoc sits between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, wine country framing the drive in either direction. La Purisima is the kind of place that reminds you why California public golf, at its best, can match anything the private clubs offer.
