Golf Frégate Provence

Few courses on the French Riviera make as immediate a visual statement as Golf Frégate. Perched on the rocky headlands above Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, the layout unfolds across dramatic limestone terrain with the Mediterranean stretching to the horizon on virtually every hole. The course opened in 1992 and was designed by Ronald Fream, whose work here takes full advantage of an extraordinary natural canvas — garrigue scrubland, stone outcroppings, umbrella pines, and sea views that routinely stop players mid-swing.

Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer sits between Bandol and Cassis in the Var department, a stretch of coastline that remains somewhat quieter than the celebrity circuit further east toward Cannes and Monaco. The local character leans toward rosé vineyards, fishing ports, and a more grounded Provençal pace — all of which you feel at Frégate, which never tries to be flashy despite its spectacular setting.

The course plays with genuine difficulty, using elevation changes, coastal wind, and tight landing zones to demand precision over power. The back nine in particular presses closest to the clifftops, and several holes require shots played directly toward the open sea — a disorienting and memorable sensation that no scorecard statistic can prepare you for.
