Few resort courses on Mexico's Caribbean coast can match the pedigree of Riviera Cancun. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II and opened in 2008, the layout winds through dense mangrove forests and alongside a series of natural lagoons, creating a playing experience that feels genuinely removed from the hotel-zone bustle just a short drive away. The conditioning is consistently immaculate, and the course draws a discerning international clientele that expects serious golf alongside the resort luxury.
The Yucatán Peninsula's flat limestone terrain means elevation change is almost nonexistent, but Jones and his team used the waterways, dense vegetation, and strategic bunkering to generate variety and genuine challenge. Accuracy off the tee matters considerably more than raw power here, and the constant presence of water keeps every decision interesting. The trade winds off the Caribbean add an unpredictable element that no caddie tip can fully prepare you for.
Cancún itself sits at the northern tip of the Riviera Maya, a region better known for its cenotes, Mayan ruins, and turquoise coastline than for golf — which makes discovering a course of this quality feel like a genuine reward for the well-traveled player.
