Few private clubs in the American Midwest carry the architectural pedigree of Camargo. Seth Raynor designed the course in the early 1920s, and it stands as one of his finest works — a meticulous translation of classic template holes drawn from C.B. Macdonald's template philosophy, featuring interpretations of the Redan, the Biarritz, and the Short, among others. Raynor died before seeing it completed, and Camargo was finished posthumously, lending the club a certain gravity in American golf history. It consistently ranks among the top courses in Ohio and regularly appears on national lists of the country's best.
The club occupies a rolling, wooded section of the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill, and the land suits Raynor's contour-driven style perfectly. The routing moves through mature hardwoods and across naturally varied terrain, with his trademark boldly contoured greens demanding precise, thoughtful approaches.
Camargo is a true private members' club in the traditional sense — low-key, unhurried, and deeply serious about the game. For students of golf architecture, it belongs in the same conversation as any classic course in the country.
