Few courses in the Southern Hemisphere carry the weight of history that The Australian Golf Club does. Founded in 1882, it is one of the oldest golf clubs in Australia, and its Rosebery home — rebuilt and shaped over decades — bears the fingerprints of Alister MacKenzie, who consulted on the layout in the early 1930s, and later Greg Norman, whose significant redesign in the 1990s sharpened the course into one of the country's most demanding examinations. The result is a layout that rewards strategic thinking and punishes loose iron play, with bunkering that reflects MacKenzie's love of visual intimidation and genuine penal consequence.
The Australian has hosted the eponymous Australian Open more times than any other venue, and its champion's roll includes Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and Peter Thomson — names that give the place an almost museum-like gravitas.
Sydney's inner-south provides the setting: flat to gently undulating land that the design team has worked hard to give movement and drama. Membership here is tightly held, making a round a genuine occasion.
