Few links courses carry quite the historical weight of Luffness New, whose origins on the East Lothian coast stretch back to 1894. Laid out across the flatlands behind Aberlady Bay — a nature reserve of international significance — the course occupies one of the most celebrated stretches of linksland in the world, sharing a coastline with Muirfield, Gullane, and North Berwick. Old Tom Morris had a hand in its early design, and the course retains much of that classical, unadorned links character: firm turf, natural humps and hollows, pot bunkers placed to punish the careless, and a routing that demands you read and use the wind rather than fight it.
Par 70 signals genuine teeth from the back tees, and Luffness New earns consistent respect among serious links devotees without the fanfare of its more famous neighbors.
The private members' club atmosphere is traditional and quietly proud. East Lothian as a whole represents one of golf's great destinations — a compact coastline delivering more top-quality links per mile than almost anywhere on earth — and Luffness New belongs fully in that company.
