Tamworth sits at the heart of the New England region of New South Wales, a rural city better known internationally as Australia's country music capital than as a golf destination. But the area's wide, sun-baked landscape — open grazing country framed by the ranges of the Great Dividing Range — translates into a particular style of inland Australian golf: generous fairways, firm conditions, and a course that plays fast underfoot for much of the year.
Longyard Golf Club is the city's primary 18-hole layout and serves the kind of role a course like this always does in a regional Australian city — it's the social backbone of the local golfing community, the place where serious country golfers test themselves and visitors find an honest, unpretentious game away from the coast.
Inland New South Wales courses tend to reward patience and ground game over aerial heroics. Expect the ball to run, the rough to firm up in summer, and greens that demand local knowledge to read well. It's the sort of place where a good local member is worth more than any rangefinder.
