High on the Allegheny Plateau in Tucker County, Canaan Valley Resort sits at roughly 3,200 feet of elevation — making it one of the highest-altitude golf destinations in the eastern United States. The surrounding valley is a genuine natural wonder, a broad highland basin ringed by forested ridgelines that gives the area a character closer to the Canadian Shield than the mid-Atlantic. Winters here are long and snow-heavy, which means the golf season runs shorter than courses a few hundred miles south, but the tradeoff is a cool, crisp playing environment that most summer visitors find remarkable.
The course is part of Canaan Valley Resort State Park, West Virginia's flagship four-season state park property. That public, accessible identity means golfers of all backgrounds make the trip, drawn as much by the scenery and the broader outdoor culture of the region as by the golf itself.
The elevation and mountain air add distance to your drives, but the valley's notorious afternoon winds and the demands of navigating a high-country layout keep scoring honest.
