Sunflower Hills has long been one of the most respected public-access courses in the Kansas City metro area, drawing players from both sides of the state line who are willing to make the drive to Bonner Springs for a genuine test of golf. The course sits in the rolling terrain of northeastern Kansas, where the landscape opens up into broad sky and the kind of unobstructed wind that can turn any iron selection into a negotiation. That wind is a real factor here — par means something different on a breezy afternoon than it does on a calm morning.
The course plays to a full par 72 and stretches the ball-striker's patience across a layout that rewards shot-shaping over raw power. It has earned a reputation as a thinking person's round, where course management separates scores more reliably than distance off the tee.
Bonner Springs sits just west of Kansas City along the Kansas River, a working-class community with deep roots in the region's agricultural and industrial history. Sunflower Hills fits that character — unpretentious, well-maintained, and genuinely enjoyable without needing to announce itself.
