Few courses in Australian golf carry the weight of history that Huntingdale does. Designed by Claude Crockford and opened in 1941, the club became synonymous with professional tournament golf when it served as the longtime host of the Australian Masters — a stretch that ran from 1979 through the mid-1990s and attracted the biggest names in world golf, including Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, and a roster of international stars who made the pilgrimage to Melbourne's sandbelt. That history alone gives the course a standing few layouts on the continent can match.
Huntingdale sits firmly within the celebrated Melbourne Sandbelt, that remarkable stretch of southeastern suburbs where a quirk of sandy, free-draining soil produced a concentration of great golf courses unmatched outside Britain and Ireland. The turf is firm and fast, the bunkering deep and penal, and the playing surfaces reward imagination over brute force in the way that defines this corner of the world.
The course earned an affectionate nickname — "The Masters Course" — that still resonates with Australian golf fans. It remains a private members' club, and playing it feels less like visiting an attraction and more like being granted access to a living chapter of the game's local lore.
