Few places carry more weight in golf's history than this stretch of Ayrshire linksland. Prestwick Golf Club is where the Open Championship was born — the first 12 editions of the Claret Jug were contested here, beginning in 1860, and the club remains one of the most venerated institutions the game has produced. Old Tom Morris won here. Young Tom Morris won here 3 times in a row and took permanent possession of the original belt. Walking these fairways means walking through the creation story of professional tournament golf itself.
The course is a genuine, uncompromising links — blind shots, cavernous bunkers, whins pressing in from the rough, and the kind of lumpy, unpredictable terrain that rewards imagination over brute force. The Cardinal bunker at the 3rd is among the most famous hazards in golf. Par is 71 rather than 72, but no one who has played here remembers it as easy.
Prestwick sits on the Firth of Clyde coast, with Arran visible across the water on a clear day. The town is part of a remarkable concentration of courses — Royal Troon and Turnberry are close neighbors — making this corner of South Ayrshire arguably the richest few miles in links golf anywhere in the world.
