Few settings in Scandinavian golf match what Gotland offers, and Visby Golfklubb makes the most of its remarkable island address. The course sits in Tofta, a few kilometers south of Visby — the medieval walled city that is one of the best-preserved Hanseatic towns in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That history seeps into the landscape around you: the light here has a particular Baltic clarity, the terrain is characteristically flat limestone karst softened by pine forest and heathland, and the sea is never far from your thoughts even when you can't see it.
Gotland's climate is the warmest and sunniest in Sweden, which extends the season and gives the turf a firmer, links-adjacent character that rewards bump-and-run play and punishes anyone who ignores the wind. The island's isolation also means you're unlikely to be rushed.
As the only full-length course on Gotland, Visby Golfklubb carries a comfortable monopoly on serious island golf — a good reason to plan a round around the broader trip that Gotland so easily justifies.
