La Prée is one of the more distinctive layouts on France's Atlantic coast, occupying the flat, wind-swept marshlands just north of La Rochelle on the Île de Ré gateway. The course takes its character entirely from this unusual terrain — open polders and salt meadows more reminiscent of a links than a conventional parkland, where the Bay of Biscay wind is never a passenger and is very often the most consequential factor on your scorecard. Architect Michel Gayon designed the layout to work with, rather than fight, the horizontal landscape, letting the natural channels and marshes serve as hazards.
La Rochelle itself is one of the most handsome port cities in France, and the surrounding Charente-Maritime département has quietly built a respectable golf offering. La Prée stands out because its setting is genuinely unusual — low-lying coastal wetlands give it a mood closer to a Dutch polder course than anything you'd expect from southwest France.
It plays as a public facility, welcoming visiting golfers without the formality of a private club, and the wind conditions mean scores here can swing dramatically depending on the day. Club golfers who enjoy a course that demands course management over raw power will find it particularly rewarding.
