Few Scottish links feel as genuinely ancient as Balcomie. The course at Crail Golfing Society — one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, founded in 1786 — occupies a rugged strip of Fife coastline on the East Neuk, where the land juts into the Firth of Forth with views across to the Isle of May and, on clear days, the hills of East Lothian. Old Tom Morris is credited with laying out the original links here in 1895, and the ground he worked with is quintessential links terrain: tight, wind-scoured turf, natural hollows, and a routing that constantly reminds you the sea is never far away.
Balcomie plays shorter than many Scottish links, which is part of its charm — this is a course where position and course management matter far more than raw power, and where the wind off the Forth can make any hole play completely differently from one round to the next.
The East Neuk of Fife is a quietly remarkable corner of Scotland, a string of old fishing villages with a strong golfing heritage. Crail itself is a working town with a preserved medieval character, and arriving at Balcomie feels like stepping into the same golfing tradition that shaped the game itself.
