Few golf courses announce themselves quite like the Dragon at Nakoma. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Nakoma Resort clubhouse — a striking, organic structure in the Sierra Nevada foothills — and the surrounding course was built to complement that architectural vision, drawing visitors to a remote corner of Plumas County that most Californians couldn't find on a map. The course takes its name seriously: the layout is demanding, the terrain unforgiving, and the experience is unlike anything in the state's more celebrated golf corridors.
Clio sits in the Indian Valley at roughly 4,500 feet elevation, where the air is thin, the pines are tall, and mountain weather can arrive without much warning. Summers are glorious — cool mornings, brilliant light, the kind of sky that makes a bad round feel almost acceptable. The high-desert Sierra landscape gives the course a rugged, wide-open character that flatters neither the timid nor the inaccurate.
For golfers willing to make the drive, the Dragon delivers something genuinely rare: serious golf in a wilderness setting anchored by a piece of American architectural history.
