Few American towns carry as much mythological weight as Cooperstown. Best known as the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, this small village in the Otsego Lake region of central New York has drawn visitors for generations, and Leatherstocking Golf Course — set on the grounds of the Otesaga Resort Hotel — is very much part of that tradition. The course takes its name from James Fenimore Cooper's frontier hero, a fitting nod in a town where Cooper himself once lived and set his most celebrated novels. The Otesaga has operated as a grand lakeside resort since 1909, and golf has been woven into the property's identity for nearly as long.
The layout sits along the eastern shore of Otsego Lake, and that setting does much of the work. Mature trees frame the fairways, and the lake makes a dramatic and recurring presence throughout the round, providing both visual drama and genuine strategic pressure on several holes.
This is resort golf done with some elegance — unhurried, scenic, and anchored to a place with a real sense of itself. Visitors tend to arrive for the Baseball Hall of Fame and find that Leatherstocking earns its own return trip.
