Few courses in the London commuter belt carry quite the same unhurried village character as Theydon Bois, a members' club whose roots stretch back to the late Victorian era. Sitting on the edge of Epping Forest in Essex, the course occupies genuinely ancient woodland, and the feeling underfoot — leaf-strewn fairways, dappled light through oak and hornbeam — is closer to a forest walk than a suburban round of golf.
The layout is a par 68, which tells you immediately this is not a course built around length or power. Short par 4s and a collection of par 3s reward precision, course management, and local knowledge over raw hitting. The forest sets the agenda: errant shots disappear into the trees, and the ground game matters in ways it rarely does on more open parkland tracks.
Theydon Bois station on the Central line sits minutes away, making this one of the few proper woodland courses genuinely reachable from central London without a car — an unlikely but very real part of its appeal.
