RAF Coningsby takes its name from the active Royal Air Force base that sits alongside it in the flat Lincolnshire fenlands — and if you're mid-swing when a Typhoon jet screams overhead on approach, don't say you weren't warned. The course occupies land shaped by the same wide, open landscape that made this corner of England so valuable to the RAF during the Second World War: big skies, long horizons, and very little shelter from the wind. In that sense, the conditions themselves become part of the challenge.
As a par 69 layout, this is a course that rewards precision and course management over raw power. Shorter designs of this type tend to feature a healthy mix of tight par 4s and reachable par 3s, where placement off the tee matters more than distance, and where a wayward iron can cost you just as dearly as a wayward driver.
Tattershall Thorpe is a quiet village in the heart of Lincolnshire, close to the medieval Tattershall Castle and the broader flatlands of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Golf here is unpretentious and community-minded — the kind of game that gets played for the love of it, with the sound of jet engines for a soundtrack.
