Few public golf courses in Chicago's western suburbs have earned the kind of consistent local following that Klein Creek has built over the decades. Designed by Dick Nugent and opened in 1989, the layout weaves through the natural creek corridors and mature tree lines that give the course both its name and its identity. Nugent, one of the Midwest's most prolific designers, had a gift for working with flat Illinois terrain without forcing it into something artificial, and Klein Creek reflects that sensibility — the routing feels organic, rewarded by the kind of subtle shot-shaping demands that separate it from blunter suburban tracks.
The course sits just off Route 59 in Winfield, a quiet DuPage County community that punches above its weight for golf. The broader western suburbs corridor — from Wheaton to Naperville — supports a dense and competitive public golf market, which means Klein Creek has had to earn its reputation on merit.
For a daily-fee facility in a crowded regional market, it plays with genuine character: creek crossings provide real strategic interest, and the mature canopy overhead gives rounds a sense of place that newer developments in the area often lack.
