Lincoln's oldest public golf course, Holmes has been a cornerstone of the city's municipal golf system for decades, offering straightforward, unpretentious golf on the gently rolling terrain of the eastern Nebraska plains. The course sits within Holmes Lake Park, a well-loved green space on Lincoln's southeast side, where the lake and surrounding parkland give the layout a more scenic character than most city-owned courses manage.
As a municipal track, Holmes plays host to the full spectrum of the game — junior programs, city championships, weekend regulars, and first-timers getting comfortable with the sport. That democratic spirit is part of its appeal. The par-72 layout is approachable without being a pushover, making it a reliable option when you want a complete round without the fuss.
Nebraska golf is often underestimated. The state's flat-to-rolling landscapes, wide skies, and persistent prairie wind create conditions that quietly test any golfer's course management. Holmes captures that honest, no-frills Midwestern character as well as any course in the Lincoln area.
