Wheaton sits in the heart of DuPage County, about 25 miles west of Chicago, and the golf here reflects that position perfectly — serious enough to satisfy the demanding Chicago-area golfer, accessible enough to serve a broad public. The South/East configuration is one of the combinable 9-hole loops at Cantigny Golf, the public facility built on the grounds of the former Cantigny estate of Robert R. McCormick, the longtime publisher of the Chicago Tribune. The property carries genuine historical weight, and the golf was designed by Roger Packard and later refined over the years to keep pace with modern expectations.
Cantigny's courses wind through mature hardwoods and open parkland, with the kind of tree-lined corridors and well-conditioned turf that routinely earn it recognition as one of the better public golf experiences in Illinois. The South/East pairing is typically considered the more challenging of the loop combinations on offer, rewarding accurate iron play over raw distance.
For visiting golfers, the broader estate — which includes war museums and formal gardens — gives the place a character that goes well beyond a standard public facility. This is a destination with a sense of permanence and purpose that's relatively rare in everyday municipal golf.
