Few golf settings on the California coast match the sheer drama of Rancho Palos Verdes, where the Palos Verdes Peninsula drops sharply into the Pacific. Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles occupies this clifftop terrain, and the views across the ocean toward Catalina Island are as arresting as any in American golf. The course was designed by Pete Dye and opened in 2006, built on a site that required extraordinary engineering — the coastal bluffs here are notoriously unstable, and construction involved massive earthwork to stabilize the land beneath the layout.
Dye's fingerprints are evident throughout: forced carries, dramatic elevation changes, and holes that play along the cliff edges with the ocean filling the horizon. Several holes rank among the most photographed in Southern California golf, and the exposure to Pacific wind means the course plays quite differently depending on conditions.
Rancho Palos Verdes itself sits about 25 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, a quiet, affluent community that feels genuinely removed from the city. The club operates as a private facility, and the combination of Dye's demanding design and the coastal setting makes it one of the more distinctive properties in the Los Angeles golf landscape.
