Butternut Creek takes its name from the small stream that winds through this mountain layout in the North Georgia highlands — a course shaped by the terrain of Union County rather than imposed upon it. Blairsville sits in the southern Appalachians at around 1,900 feet of elevation, and the land here has genuine topography: ridgelines, hardwood hollows, and the kind of natural contour that makes for interesting golf without any architect having to manufacture drama. A creek coming into play on a mountain course is rarely decorative.
Union County is a long way from the resort corridor of the Georgia coast or the manicured suburban layouts of metro Atlanta. Blairsville draws hikers and lake visitors — Vogel State Park and Lake Nottely are nearby — and the golf here has that same unhurried, outdoors character.
