Par 68 layouts often get dismissed before a player even steps on the first tee, but Boyce Hill has been quietly earning respect on the Essex hills since its founding in 1921 — making it one of the older established clubs in the county. Sitting above the Thames Estuary town of Benfleet, the course occupies genuinely elevated ground for this part of England, and on a clear day the views across the estuary and out toward Kent are a genuine distraction from the business of scoring.

The shorter par configuration reflects the terrain rather than any lack of ambition. The course plays across rolling, sometimes steep ground, and the members here will tell you that the hills extract more from your legs — and your card — than the yardage alone suggests. Tree-lined fairways and tight, well-kept turf are characteristic of the better Essex parkland clubs.
