Few courses in America ask quite so much of a golfer so early. Spyglass Hill opens with a thrilling downhill plunge through the pines toward Stillwater Cove, and then — having shown you the Pacific — it turns its back on the ocean and sends you deep into the Del Monte Forest for the remaining holes, where Monterey pines close in and the terrain becomes a more intimate, demanding puzzle. The two acts of this course feel almost like separate rounds stitched together by Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s exacting design hand, completed in 1966.
The course takes its name from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island — Stevenson is said to have found inspiration along this very stretch of the Monterey Peninsula — and that literary romance suits a layout that rewards imagination as much as power. Spyglass Hill regularly ranks among the toughest tracks on the entire Peninsula, which is saying something given its neighbors.
It has been a longtime host of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, meaning professionals and amateurs alike have suffered and marveled here in equal measure. Playing it is one of California's genuine bucket-list experiences.
