Bernedo is a small rural municipality in the eastern corner of Álava, the largest of the Basque Country's 3 provinces, where the landscape transitions from the wet, green hills of the Atlantic north toward the drier, more open terrain of the Rioja Alavesa wine country. It's a remote and quietly dramatic corner of Spain — rolling uplands, limestone ridges, and big skies that feel a long way from the urban energy of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the provincial capital roughly 50 kilometers to the west.
Izki Golf sits within the orbit of the Izki Natural Park, a protected area of native oak forest that is one of the largest of its kind in the Basque Country. That setting shapes everything about the feel of a round here — the course plays through and alongside genuine countryside, with the woodland, wildlife, and open Álavan plateau providing a backdrop that few courses in the region can match. It is a genuinely rural golf experience, far from the manicured resort corridors of the coast.
For visiting golfers, the appeal is as much about the journey as the golf itself — a part of the Basque interior that most travelers never reach, paired with proximity to the Rioja Alavesa's vineyards and village restaurants just a short drive south.
