Few golf courses carry a name as evocative as this one. The May River winds through the lowcountry of coastal South Carolina, and Bluffton — a small, historically rich town just inland from Hilton Head Island — sits right along its banks. Jack Nicklaus designed the May River Course at Montage Palmetto Bluff, and it consistently ranks among the finest resort courses in the American South. The layout opened in 2004 and is reserved exclusively for guests and members of the Palmetto Bluff resort community, giving it a quiet, unhurried atmosphere that feels a world apart from the bustle of nearby Hilton Head.
The course moves through a landscape of maritime forest, tidal marshes, and ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss — the kind of scenery that slows your pace before you even reach the first tee. Nicklaus shaped the routing to follow the natural topography rather than fight it, producing a round that feels organic and varied.
The lowcountry climate means golf is playable year-round, though spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions. Expect firm, fast bentgrass greens, holes that ask for strategic positioning off the tee, and the occasional glimpse of the May River itself threading through the property.
