Star Valley Ranch sits in one of Wyoming's more quietly dramatic landscapes — a broad alpine valley carved between the Salt River and Wyoming ranges, running north to south through Lincoln County. Afton, the valley's largest town, sits at roughly 6,000 feet elevation, which means the air is thin enough to add real distance to your shots and the summers short enough that the course plays a distinctly seasonal game. The surrounding peaks, still snowcapped well into June, give nearly every hole a backdrop that would distract a monk.
The name says exactly what this place is about: you're not sneaking up on the views here. A par 70 layout suggests a design that trades a couple of the longer par 4s for something more strategic, rewarding placement over brute length in a setting where the scenery could easily upstage the golf if the routing let it.
Afton draws visitors for its outdoors culture — fishing, hunting, snowmobiling — and golf fits naturally into that rhythm. This is a community course serving a small, tight-knit valley, the kind of place where the pro shop conversation runs as long as the back nine.
