Rushford sits in the heart of Minnesota's Driftless Area, the rugged southeastern corner of the state that escaped the flattening force of the last glaciers. The result is a landscape of steep wooded bluffs, winding creek valleys, and some of the most dramatic topography in the Upper Midwest — terrain that has nothing in common with the pancake-flat courses most people picture when they think of Minnesota golf.
Ferndale Country Club belongs to that landscape in the way a private members' club should: it feels like a place grown out of the ground rather than imposed on it. A par-72 layout in this kind of rolling, heavily contoured country means elevation changes are almost certainly a factor on multiple holes, and the surrounding tree cover and valley breezes give the course a character that changes measurably from round to round and season to season.
As a members-only club serving a small rural community, Ferndale has the quality that defines the best small-town private clubs — a genuine sense of belonging to somewhere specific. This isn't a destination resort or a prestige tournament venue; it's the kind of place where the members know every bounce and every quirk, and that insider knowledge is half the game.
