El Gouna Golf Club sits within one of Egypt's most ambitious resort developments — the planned town of El Gouna, built largely from scratch on the Red Sea coast about 30 kilometers north of Hurghada. Founded by the Orascom group in the 1990s, El Gouna grew into a self-contained community of lagoons, waterways, and villas, and the golf course was always central to its identity as a destination resort. The layout was designed by Gene Bates, threading through the stark desert landscape with the Red Sea and the Eastern Desert mountains providing a dramatic backdrop that no inland course could replicate.
Playing here means navigating a course where the desert is very much in play. Mature palm trees and imported turf create pockets of green against the surrounding arid terrain, and the wind off the Red Sea can shift conditions considerably from morning to afternoon. The combination of salt air, sun, and silence gives the round an atmosphere genuinely unlike anything in mainland European golf.
El Gouna draws a cosmopolitan crowd — European tourists, Egyptian weekenders from Cairo, and resort guests making it a centerpiece of a broader Red Sea holiday. It remains one of the most prominent golf facilities on Egypt's Red Sea Riviera, operating year-round in a climate that is almost entirely dry and reliably warm outside of the peak summer heat.
