East Brighton

Brighton has long punched above its weight as a golf destination, and East Brighton Golf Club — perched on the South Downs above the city — is a big reason why. The club dates to the late 19th century, making it one of the older established layouts along this stretch of the English south coast. Playing on downland turf rather than the heathland or links more commonly associated with classic British golf, it occupies the chalk hills that roll inland from the cliffs, with the kind of close-cropped, fast-running ground that rewards ground game thinking over aerial power.

The South Downs setting delivers what you'd expect from downland golf: open skies, persistent wind off the Channel, and elevation changes that alter club selection on what might otherwise look like straightforward holes. The views across Brighton and out toward the sea are a genuine feature of the round, not incidental scenery.

This is an established members' club with real history behind it — the sort of course that rewards repeat play as you learn how the terrain and wind conspire together. Visitors are welcome, but the regulars clearly have an edge.
